Bachelor of Information Technology

Course Overview

The Bachelor of Information Technology is an award at AQF Level 7. It is a tightly integrated specialist degree with both a theoretical and practical focus that prepares graduates for careers in information technology. There is an emphasis on career-focused learning and developing technological understanding and skills that are in high demand worldwide.

The degree first develops the core knowledge and understanding required by all IT professionals and then provides for a choice of specialist study in two high-demand areas of Information Technology - Application Development and Cyber Security.

The Subject Learning Outcomes (SLOs) scaffold to develop the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) and together these learning outcomes progressively ensure the GBC Graduate Attributes and ensure graduates meet the requirements of IT professionals as expressed through the Seoul Accord, the ACS Core Body of Knowledge for IT Professionals, and the Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA).

To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Information Technology, a student must successfully complete 300 credit points, or 24 subjects. The Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) is a specialist degree with both a theoretical and practical focus that aims to develop technological understanding and skills that are in high demand worldwide.

  • Demand for Graduates

  • The ACS Australia’s Digital Pulse 2019 prepared by Deloitte Economics forecasts that Australia’s technology workforce will grow by 100,000 workers in trend terms between 2018 and 2024, at an average annual growth rate of 2.3% (exceeding overall workforce growth of 1.3% p.a.) with the technology workforce increasing to 792,000 workers.
  • A snapshot of the sector reveals that Australia’s technology workforce has seen average trend growth of 2.5% per annum between 2011 and 2018, outpacing growth in the overall Australian labour market of 1.7% over this period.
  • The report notes that while university technology course completions have been seen slight growth, the future forecast for technology skills has not materially changed over the last four years and meeting the voracious demands for more technology workers from Australia’s businesses will be a huge challenge. While Australia’s pipeline of technology workers and skills is gradually improving the number of degree completions will not meet the growing demand.
  • IT services exports grew from $2.93b in 2016-17 to $3.78b in 2017-18. As a result, the IT services trade surplus increased from $170m to $515m.
  • The current COVID-19 pandemic has generated extensive and rapid growth in information technology and communications services and the immediate future is likely to see even greater demand for technology skills.
  • Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, ACS forecasts suggested that technology workers will need another 164,000 qualifications over the period 2018 – 2024 in trend terms, with 121,000 of these in higher level postgraduate and undergraduate degrees.
  • Productivity growth in the Australian economy will be increasingly driven by digital technology. The growing digital economy means that IT skills will play an increasingly important role in future economic growth. Australia needs to ensure that its education system, policy settings and business practices are all working towards equipping the country’s workers with the required technological skills.
  • Big Data, cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence and robotics are going to be significant influences in both the IT and Business sectors and there already is enormous growth in cyber-security – 16.9% increase in jobs over the past 5 years. (Dept. of Employment, 2019 Industry Employment Projections Report).
  • Computer Design and Related Services job numbers predicted to grow to 279,500 by May 2023.
